World Cultures Question #8

Record your answers and your parent's answers to the following questions...

What is "racial profiling"?

Should "racial profiling" be used in airport security?

55 comments:

  1. Racial profiling is a form of racism involving police focus on people of certain racial groups when seeking suspected criminals. I think this is wrong because everyone is the same in God's eyes and race does not exist to Him. Also, it is not fair to accuse an innocent person of a crime that someone of their race committed. Racial profiling should not be used in airport security because it is unfair to apply more security to someone because of what other people have done (in their racial group).
    -Justin Brendel

Recently, I saw a muslim man in the airport walking onto our flight and I have to admit that I wanted him to be searched more thoroughly than others. My fear led me to believe, for a moment, that it would be fair to apply more security to him than me. But, then I thought of Jesus saying, " treat others the way you would want to be treated" and I realized how unfair it would be. It also makes me think of how Christians are treated in this country. Christians are asked to be tolerant of every religion and yet no one tolerates our beliefs. We are constantly attacked for mentioning our faith. It's kind-of the same thing. religion profiling!

  2. Racial Profiling is a way of racial separation that involves police having "random" checks on "people" (muslims) for bombs and guns. I think muslims should be checked since they are more likely to have a suicide bomb since it is mostly muslims attempting to bomb planes. I also think that everyone should be more throughly checked. White christian guy might not be checked as much as a tanned turbaned Iranian, but the white guy might use his appearance to his advantage. I also remember that God says " Love your neighbor as yourself". I think not only certain people should be checked more throughly, I think everyone one should be. So I am mostly against racial profiling and more toward checking everyone for bombs and stuff.

  3. Racial profiling is when People (police officers and security guards)do checks on Mexicans and Muslims and black people for no reason! If a Police officer see's a white person and a black person the police officer is more likely to check the black person better then the white person. Racial profiling is a cruel thing but it can help keep our world safe but it is sinful. God say's love your neighbor as your self. Well then shouldn't we stop doing "checks" on people that are harmless and have just as much right as we do. They should use Racial profiling in airports because of all the attempt bomb attacks and stuff. yes it is racist but it could help save millions of lives. I do think though that security guards should check every one harder and check every one the same way.

  4. Racial profiling will never solve the security problems at the airport. The choosing of people for extra security checks because of the color of their skin, or their name is not an effective screening tool. Racial profiling has been proven to be ineffective by police officers. We should not judge the potential actions of a person because of their skin color or their name whether in our personal life or in airport screening. - Chris DiGiorgio

  5. Racial profiling is when a person of authority judges someone else because of what they look like. It's a form a rascism in my opinion but most try to make it seem like its not. When you are deciding wheather or not to pull someone over because of what their car looks like or even by how dark their skin is, it's not fair. Sometimes as humans we tend to assume we know everything about a person just because they are walking a certain way or wearing certain clothes. But that's just our sinful nature. As Christians though, we should'nt judge a person by their outside, but by their heart. I strongly disagree that racial porfiling should be used in an airport. Anyone could carry arms...an old lady with a child, a buisnessman...anyone. Just because you might look dangerous doesnt mean you are. It's not fair to the muslim going to visit his family or the black man that regrets getting those five tattoos. Though racial profiling isnt fair to many, i dont think it's going to change any time soon. But as Christians we can help by not doing it ourselves.

Racial profiling, is a form of racism, it just happens to be used by people who have some form of authority. Its unfair and it shouldn't be done.

  6. Racial profiling is another type of racism. It is when the police make big assumptions about a person just because of their race. In airport security racial profiling shouldn't be used because you shouldn't judge people on how they look. If airport security wanted to stop racial profiling then they should get better luggage scanners so they can search for bombs and explosives.
    -McKenna Wood

Racial profiling is as old as the earth. Every society has unjustly accused those who look different or whose customs seem "abnormal." Airport security is a tough place to overcome racial profiling post 9-11. We should invest in better technology that will make everyone feel secure without singling out particular races.

  7. Racial Profiling is when people of a different race, religion, or country are put into categories. There might be a certain stereotype for the person, or group of people. So to a person of a different race/religion/country, they might see that person the same way you expect them to be like, but really they could be the total opposite. This is unfair to the person, because you are judging a book by its cover, instead of getting to know that person, or at least give them the benefit of the doubt. My best friend's dad is from Lebanon, and so Hyatt, my friend, has been there many times and learned that most people are not what people expect. They are not the evil terrorists that many think they are. It is just a stereotype that has been placed on the Muslim people, because of Muslims who are terrorists. This is an excellent example of how people or groups of people can be judged by what is seen on the outside. God says that man looks at the flesh, but God looks at the heart. Even if that person is a Muslim or a Mexican person, that doesn't mean you have to judge them. Allow the answer to unfold, instead of coming to a conclusion. I think that checking certain people more carefully in the airport is not a fair thing to do. Instead, everyone should be checked with a higher standard, so that it does not seem that people are being singled out as the bad guy. Or, don't check people more closely at all.

  8. Racial profiling is said not to be a form of racism, but to me, i think it most definately is a form of racism. Airports use the excuse that it's for our country's security, which in some cases is true, but i really think sometimes it's unnecessary. I think they should lay off when dealing with foreign passengers. I think they should check the Muslims/Isrealies the same way they check the other passengers. If the security isn't good enough to prevent terriorsit from getting in to the country, it obviously needs to be stepped up. Therefore, I think it is wrong to use racial profiling in airports, and I think we should have a better security if this is needed.

  9. In my opinion racial profiling is another form of racism. It is when the police look at person more closely because they are from a different country, have a different religion, or because of there race. An example of this would be how it is wrong to assume that just because someone is a Muslim that they are a bad person or a terrorists. Just because some terrorists are Muslims doesn't mean all Muslims are terrorists. This happens with other religions and races as well. I think it is wrong of the security guards in airports to assume things of people. You can't judge a book by its cover. We have to remember that God looks at the inside and not the outside.
    -Katie Kassis

Racial profiling is using someone's race or appearance as an indicator of how dangerous they are or their likelihood of being a criminal. It is a form of racism and should not be used as a form of airport security. In addition if terrorists know we use racial profiling they will start to send people who don't fit our profile knowing they will get less attention from airport security agents.

  10. Racial profiling is used in many places, not just airports. Retail places, where they will watch the african-american coming into the store more than the white person. Or they will watch the Arabic coming into the store not as much as the Jewish guy. It is definitley a form of racisim and i do not think you should you use it in airports. Assuming something of a person just because of their race is very wrong .You can only assume if you know that the person has a crimminal backround of some sort. So no it should not be used in airports or any other place. - PatHardy

Racial Profiling is the act of assuming, and pre-judging a individual or groups of people and placing them into one catagoriy based on their race. This practice should not be used in airport security or any other form of law enforcement. Our laws and regulations should be used to protect the rights of people, and should be conducted in a manner of equality. If there is information or intelligence that should suggest criminal intent,or potential danger or harm to other people, every measure of investigation, restriction, and detainment should be taken without recourse.-Sherman Hardy.

  11. we both agreed that racial profiling is when someone is looked at or judged based on what someone sees there skin color to be. Basically to judge them on their skin color. We said that in some ways it should be because most terroists are not from this country. therefore they would look different. We shouls use it and pat some of them down and do more heavier because they are the terrorist, but not overdo it because that becomes the whole issue of race. Just keep it simple and not to complex in the the airport.

  12. Racial Profiling is when a person judges someone solely on what they look like. I don't think racial profiling should be used in airport security. Like, for example when they do "random" security checks they might not be so random. Because when they do that the people who are in authority might be more likely to check a black, muslim, or mexican person than a white guy. When in actuality a white person is just as likely to do something as someone who is different. But the person who is in authority's view of those people has been swayed by the media or other personal views.

  14. Racial profiling is when you judge someone on what they look like. It should be used in airports because a high percentage of terror attacks are committed by muslims. If you were on a plane wouldn't you like to know that your plane won't be exploding today and, you won't die. It should be one of many factors to use to help us find terrorist. We use information every day to make our decisions, why should this be different.

Racial Profiling can be said to be a form of racism. i think that it shouldnt be used in airport security and things like that, just check everybody for bombs and weapons, even though a high percentage of terrorists are muslims, its not right to think something about someonejust because they look like a terrorist or not.they shouldnt use racial profiling in airport security. -sam henrickson

  16. Racial profiling is used by police in security to determine whether someone is a suspect likely to commit a certain crime. For example, a policeman might look at a Middle Eastern man and draw him out of the crowd for inspection, because many ists are from that region. in that sense, racial profiling is almost like stereotyping people by their race. This can have good reasons and motives behind it, but can be unfair to those who are suspected. Of course not everyone from the Middle East is a ist, and those who are not and are inspected by the police could be offended because of it. But if policemen did not inspect every man of suspect then they could miss one, and the consequences of that could be terrible. Another aspect to consider is that ists and dealers and people of the sort do not always appear as one might expect. They could be the average everyday American, or the average traveler. Therefore, no one can know whether the man one randomly picks to inspect will be the right one or not. I do not believe that policemen in airports or any type of security anywhere should be racist. However the stereotypes are in existence for a reason, and then the average Joe is not always as average as people assume. For the protection of the country, something should be done to prevent security from choosing the wrong suspect. One cannot be too careful if it means that a city or airplane is at risk of being destroyed. A solution that can appease the people against racial profiling and the people who want to take caution is this: improve the security systems of everything so that nothing is missed and everything is detected. If everyone is a suspect, can anyone get by? ~Alice Fugate~

Racial profiling is the practice of targeting people for investigation on the basis of their background. Yes, we should definitely use racial profiling to identify people more likely to commit acts of ism and focus on them instead of the vast majority of people whose backgrounds do not make them probable ists. This way we focus our energy and resources on the areas most likely to result in success for us in keeping our travelers safe. ~Bob Fugate~

  17. Racial profiling is when authorities chose different ways to treat other people. I don't think it is right because its just a cruel way to treat other races different. For example if you go to Canada and you going to fly, if you are not canadian and they say " Canadians in this and others in the other that would be wrong. So that is why I think it is wrong. 18. Racial profiling is when police or a person of authority suspects that someone comitted or will comitt a crime based on their race or background. This seems absured to me because everyone is a suspect, no matter what color skin they are, or what they look like. Police should not jump to conclusions about someone based on their race. I belive that racial profiling should not be used in airport security because no one should be more likely to comitt a crime than the person before and after them. The recent attempted plane bombing was not by a muslim but a nigerian man-we cannot just assume that muslims are terrorists. we should not take chances with airport security...everyone is a suspect.-caroline holliday

Racial Profiling is when someone is selected for questioning based on their skin color. Yes, because of the recent rise of terrorist attacks by muslims. The use of racial profiling would provide more intense screening and better protect our country from terrorists-Becky Holliday

  19. Racial Profiling is a form of racism when the police focuses on people of a certain racial group when seeking their suspected criminals. In airport security, i would personally like it if the security forces did use racial profiling because of the terrorist situations. it just would make me feel more safe flying on a plane if i knew that middle-eastern people, or other races were definatly not harmful. But, when looking at the big picture, if i were a middle eastern muslim trying to catch a flight, i would be absolutely FURIOUS if i was the only one who had to get searched. It just wouldn't be fair. I would think... just because im muslim and they're white, why do i have to waste my time getting more thoroughly searched?!?! So i guess you could call me "on the fence" for this one. I understand it from both points of view, but because im not muslim, i'm leaning more towards my first decision of using racial profiling in airports.

I didn't believe that racial profiling was a fair practice for our law enforcement officials to use...until the tragedy of September 11th. Then, the shoe bomber guy, and now the guy caught with explosives in his undergarments. So far, the majority of the threats on our airlines have been made by people of middle eastern descent. I do feel sorry for those picked out of a crowd because they "look" like they may pose a threat. But even they should understand. It's a fact that there are organizations who's sole purpose is to harm Americans, and racial profiling may be the first line of defense in questioning their purpose in our county.

  20. I do think racial profiling should be used in airports because they would do the same to us. Race has always been a concern bacause people want to be around people like them. Also ever since 9/11 arabs have been questiones and looked at differently based on there skin tone and hair... I personally dont have a problem with arabs or mexicans because of how I was raised by my mom. In airports I do feel a little suspicious when I see those types of people but I'm the least famous person you may know.

  21. Racial Profiling is when certain people of paticular ethnic groups are suspected for certain things. In other words, racial profiling is just another form of racism. I do not think that racial profiling is fair, and it should not be done. I know that racial profiling goes on everywhere on a daily occurance. An example that I can think of that is racial profiling is sometimes when you see a person from the middle east walking in the airport, a certain part inside of you automatically assumes that that person is a terrorist. This is not true in all cases, nor is it right, but it is still somewhat true. Now this certain person may or may not be a terrorist, but we have to see the good in all people. I am not saying that we should not be causious around people that we do not know but I don't think that it nessicary to automatically group them in the something that they may not be. I do not think that racial profiling should be used in airports because they should not suspect someone just because of the background or race. Most people that are in the airport are just normal people like you an me just trying to get from one place to another. There are some exceptions to this, but that is why you have to go through sucirity. I don't think that it is fair to pull one person aside for special screening just because of where they come from.

  22. Racial Profiling is the consideration of race when developing a profile of suspected criminals.I think when your analyzing a crime you shouldn't point the finger at one race. I see it as a form of racism. You should judge it on who committed it and that's that. In our airports they take security so seriously now. And to look at a specific group of people and think " Oh, they might have a bomb or something that will harm others on the plane. I our society wasn't so prejudice all the time maybe we could accept people more. For their personality's or how smart they are. Not how attractive they are or their race of there backgroungs just them

  23. Racial Profiling is a form of racism by the police in involvement with a crime. Although, I do not agree with it. I do not think it depends as much on the ethnicity than it does groups and interest the person is involved with. If I were trying to catch a criminal then I would look into their background and who their friends are first rather than falsely accusing another man with the same ethnicity. Although in airport security I think it is a whole different issue because usually people like to travel with families and close friends so maybe then it could be an exception. We are all created and put on this earth equally and I do not think people should be falsely accused of doing something just from where they came from.

  24. The definition of racial profiling is: Racial profiling is the inclusion of racial or ethnic characteristics in determining whether a person is considered likely to commit a particular type of crime or an illegal act or to behave in a "predictable" manner (Wikipedia). So basically it’s looking at someone’s skin color and determining whether that person is a criminal or not. Most people would say that racial profiling is racist, judgmental, or just plain stereotypical. But I think racial profiling is needed for airport security. That doesn’t mean that every Muslim that walks in is going to throw a bomb at any second, that every black person is going to pull out a gun, or that every Mexican is importing drugs. I think it’s important to think the best of everyone, but it seems that most racial profiling is correct. It didn’t just form from somebody’s imagination. For instance, Latin Americans (not saying all of them) are in poverty so to make money for their families they try to send drugs into America. I don’t think it’s right to assume that every Latin American is carrying drugs (any person can be), but I think it can be considered. Also a lot of Americans are afraid of Muslims because of the hate they show towards America and Christians but it is wrong to assume that every Muslim is out to get us. I don’t think being stereotypical is right in any way and I don’t think someone should be pulled aside for their skin color. The problem with racial profiling is that we could wind up making a suspected black person step to the side while some person we never thought of checking out is carrying a gun that he or she intends to use. Now I’m on the fence about all of it. Racial profiling wouldn’t even be an issue if we could just have better airport security. Why can’t we just be on the lookout for crimes, not the type of people that could possibly commit them? So I guess my conclusion is that it is unfair to assume that one particular person is this or that, but that it can be considered. But I don’t think it should be considered before other things, but that it’s just there and everyone is just there and if only we had better technology where everyone could be checked quickly and precisely. God created us to be equal so shouldn’t we be pulled to the side equally?

  25. Racial profiling is basically racism based upon your ethnic group, religion, etc.

i think that racial profiling should not be used in airports. because you should be looking at the way people are acting not from a racial stand point. but you can't blame airport security for racial profiling because from pass events they have a mind set of it being the same type of people from the previous events.

  28. Racial profiling could be called racism, but, is it better to be safe or sorry? In a way, I agree with and disagree with racial profiling. Almost every single terrorist act has been performed by someone named Muhammad who is from the Middle East. Unfortunately, this is not simply a funny coincidence. These statistics give us a “profile” of who commits terrorist acts, and gives us a person type to watch out for. On the other hand, the Bible tells us that we need to treat everyone equally and with the same amount of respect, no matter skin color or name. If we do need to raise the security for increasing terrorist acts in airports, increase security for everyone, not just a “likely” person, just because of their race, religion, or name.

  29. I think that racial profiling is just another form of racism. People try to make it sound ok by giving it this fancy word, but it’s not ok. Racial profiling is basically an authority judging someone by their skin color, what they look like, what they wear, or even what car they drive. An example would be if a police pulls someone over just because they look suspicious. I think it would be absolutely wrong to use racial profiling in the airport. Just because someone might look scary or skeptical, doesn’t mean they have a bomb. Someone such as an old man, or an innocent looking lady, anyone could have a bomb. This is why we shouldn’t use it in airports, because security could be searching this one scary guy with lots of tattoos, but an old innocent lady could just slip through. We should not judge people from their past. As Christians, we should set a good example, and not judge people on what they are on the outside, but what’s in their heart. It’s just wrong to group people into categories and judge them into thinking there someone there not. This is why racial profiling is wrong.

  30. Racial profiling is an awkward term. The real solution is “profiling.” At airport security, one should more carefully scrutinize anyone who is at increased risk for producing terror. This should not be related to race, per se, as the real risk factors have been shown to be country of origin and religious affiliation (Islam). If a Pakistani man named Muhammad tries to board a plane, it would be worth the time and effort to more carefully screen that passenger. It does not imply guilt nor should it incur “judgment” of the individual. It just uses the data that is been acquired about the risk factors for travelers. In our screening of travelers with metallic prostheses, we do not imply guilt but we do provide a more thorough pat-down of those individuals because of the risk of weapons or bombs in/on these people. The Bible teaches us to be “wise like serpents and innocent as doves.”

  31. I myself think that racial profiling is another form of racism. Although, you could say that the definition of r.p. says otherwise. racial profiling: the consideration of race when developing a profile of suspected criminals; by extension, a form of racism involving police focus on people of certain racial groups when seeking suspected criminals. When this says consenderation of race, i think it fails to mention that whites are rarely prosecuted of planting bomb's under monumental bridges to make a statement of their rights. which of course this does make sense, its not like you can walk down the streets of NYC and see a gang of white preppy teenagers, thats just not how the social work in the U.S. works these days. but, if someone was saying that it would be easier for a white man to go through airport secutity fully armed, versus a black man, i would agree. adding to this statment, since im a white person wouldnt it be quite easy for a a white securty guard, policeman, or even a parent, to agree with me. with that said this is exactly the reason why any airport any where should NOT have racial profiling. the reason being this is because if any criminal of any race caught wind that another race was being prosecuted more for crimes, than that would make it easier for another man of another race to get away with those crimes, since the police weren't paying quite enough attention to them because they were busy giving a muslim a pat down and searching his luggage instead of the guilty white man. i think the races these days cause a lot more contreversy than it should. God made us all equal and i don't even think there should be a seperation of races anywhere.
    -mary hannah skelton :))

my mom also thinks that there should be no racial profiling in airports. although there should be some awareness of the seperation b/w the races. she belives this is so because since they are so seperated we need to be aware of what each indivual race is responsible for, and what they cause.

  32. Racial profiling is a form of racism. It is judging someone on their nationality or the color of their skin. I think that racial profiling is unfair in general but I personally think that using it in airports is a good idea. Because most of the terrorists are from the middle east it would make me feel better if they were checked more carefully than say a white person. All though if I were from the middle east I would not want to be checked more carefully than anyone else. So I see from both sides and the Bible tells us to treat other the way we liked to be treated so I guess that I don't think they should use racail profiling in airports.

  33. Generally speaking, racial profiling is judging a person's character based on the color of his or her skin. When it comes to airport security, however, I feel that racial profiling is warranted. There have been mamy threats and attacks towards America and other countries by terrorists from the Middle East. In the interest of security for everyone, including those innocent from the Middle East, I feel that the goverent is justified in doing background checks on persons from this area.

  34. Racial profiling is basically when the police separate just a certain race and they stop and harass them more thoroughly than another race. Even though the police might find many criminals like that, it is wrong because God sees us all as his children. We are all equal in his eyes and all are not perfect but we live in a imperfect world.
    Christopher

Racial profiling is a type of stereotyping that we have seen in our society. It is not right yet there are many documented cases that it occurs. It is when a people of a certain race (ie. black people) are closely watched and sometimes stopped and harass because of their skin color. At the airport, I do not believe racial profiling should occur. If anything, security should be “tightened” in other ways.

  35. Racial profiling is basically stereotyping. For example if they look like they look are muslims they will group them with bombers and with the middle eastern people. I think that Racial profiling should be used in airports. It doesn't mean that every single person in the airport is a bad person, people just want to be very carful and cautious. It is better to be safe then sorry. I know that sometimes it hurts peoples feelings when they have to step aside to be checked carefully, but it is a necessity to make sure nothing happens to the people on board.

Racial profiling is when a person is characterized as an "outsider". Yes racial profiling should be put in airport security if it makes it safer for the airlines, and safer for the people traveling.

  36. Racial profiling is assuming facts about someone with certain physical features are the same as everybody else of their race or ethnic group. But of course, no one is exactly the same as another person. You may be of the same race , but that does not mean you have the same ideals and morals as they do. Its a natural thing to do, it doesn't make it right but we have an innate need to protect ourselves and Racial profiling is a way we feel is needed t=for protection. With that said, we are living in a time of high tensions between nations. And one of our vulnerabilities is our air lines. At airports there is a lot of exposed people, which makes it an easy target. Right now people are trying to hurt the innocent people of our nation. So, one safety percaution that is needed is racial profiling. Its just a double check to make sure they are not bringing aboard any unwanted objects. I think racial profiling is ok for airport security as long as we are not judging that person or their race, but simply trying to make sure everybody is completely safe.
    -Katie Mitcham-

Racial profiling is the process of characterizing a group of people based on their skin color, the clothes they wear, their religious beliefs, etc..

Because we live in desperate and violent times I believe racial profiling is appropriate to use in airport for those we believe mean to cause harm to innocent people. For purposes of the answer I am referring to possible terrorists. I believe, however that we have to be cognizant of the impact this will have on those being profiled. I believe it will be seen as a violation of human rights and it is. But it is necessary. I believe for certain religions it will create an uproar and could eventually lead to further violence in areas more vulnerable. Non terrorist countries will have to remain ever vigilant regarding the tactics and methods used by those who want to harm innocent people. Eventually racial profiling may become ineffective as new ideas are implemented to achieve terrorist goals.

  37. Dane's mom thinks: Racial profiling is when authorities use the information they have about people who have already committed crimes and use that information to determine whether to look more closely at people with similar characteristics. Today there is controversy about whether to use it in screening people with Middle Eastern physical characteristics more closely than people who do not have those characteristics. I think it should be used in security situations because currently America is under attack by Islamic Facists who wish to do harm to the American people. The people who wish to destroy America do have common characteristics - typically they are young-ish Muslim men. It seems reasonable to me that they be scrutinized more closely than other airplane passengers such as elderly Asian or Caucasian men or women or children.
Dane thinks: Racial profiling is when people look at someone, say it is an Arabian, and say that they are a terrorist. It should be used because it is better to be mean and catch a guy than to be nice and have a plane blow up.

  38. racial profiling is almost a kind of stereotyping that goes on. it may be an arab in an airport is check more thoughoughly and an american can get through with little checking. i think that maybe racial profiling is wrong just walking around on the street, but if you are in an airport than it might be safer for security guards to racialy profile someone for others saftey.

  39. The definition of racial profiling on dictionary.com is the consideration of race when developing a profile of suspected criminals; by extension, a form of racism involving police focus on people of certain racial groups when seeking suspected criminals. My much more simple definition is judging people on the way they look. In our world today airports are welcoming this method into the criminal suspect choosings. However is this method effective? I believe not. But in some cases it very well could be. But does that make it right? Racial profiling in God's eyes makes no sense. He sees everyone the same in any occasion. So racial profiling in his and my eyes is not effective or needed. My mom agrees with me saying that this is what our country has come to. And it isnt going to change anytime soon.

  40. Racial profiling is one type of racism. It is when you exclude one race or religion because of things that some people in their race or religion have done. It happens a lot when people are just walking around and others treat them badly because of others in their race. I don't think that racial profiling should be used in airports but there are somethings that need to be done to make sure that everyone is safe. The airport should just make everyone go through a metal detector. If anyone(not just people of a certain race) looks supicous they should be questioned. -Dannygail

Racial profiling is looking at someone and seeing that they have dark skin and dark hair and saying that they are foreign or terrorists. But maybe they could have just sat under the tanning bed too long and spent a couple hours at the hair salon. Also dark skin and dark hair could be part of their ancestry or maybe they are born that way. I don't think that it should be used in airport security because if you are born with dark hair and skin and maybe you look a little foreign, security guards are going to be stricter on you for no reason.

  42. Racial profiling is when government officials, or local authorities search a person more than others due to race, ethnicity, or appearance. I believe that this can in fact help cut down on the attacks on our country. God says to love our neighbors as our selves, but he also says that murder is a sin. I think if they would use racial profiling Jack Bauer's days wouldn't be so long. So yes i think it should be used in our airports and other places because it can potentially help stop terrorism in our near future. By Henry Mills

Civilizations have a dismal history of committing atrocities when the concept of racial profiling is an accepted means of discerning a security risk. In the not so distant past, the United States rounded up nearly 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent and forced them to live in internment camps as a response to the attacks on Pearl Harbor. In the previous centuries, the United States practically wiped out the Native American population as a result of an ill-conceived threat to the safety of the settlers. In today's world, many United States citizens of Hispanic descent are assumed to be in the country illegally and consequently mistreated and denied rights. Likewise, people of Middle Eastern descent are targeted as terrorists simply because of a prejudicial assessment based on physical characteristics.

Jesus ministry extended to all people, most especially to those who were perceived to be threats to holiness and to society. It is not proper, nor Christ-like, to pre-judge anyone at airport security or at any location. I do not know how one can claim to not be prejudiced, yet deny human dignity based on physical characteristics. I believe that we possess the technology and the resources to properly screen passengers of all racial heritage without demeaning a certain group.

The Israeli government officials and the airport administration have found it far more meaningful to examine the recent travel patterns of passengers rather than the country of origin of the profiled traveler. Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, was a British citizen. The Christmas Day terrorist was from Nigeria (not an Middle Eastern country) but had recently traveled to Yemen. Travel itineraries seems to be a more objective, and apparently more effective, means of "profiling." With a little due diligence, I believe it is possible to distinguish the troubling passengers without sacrificing the inalienable rights of which this country and its citizens are so proud.

  44. Racial profiling is a judging some one as a criminal just because of the way they look or their certain race. Just because someone may look like a criminal because of their race doesn’t mean they are one. Every person is different and treating someone one way because of the way they look is wrong. Although it may be wrong safety comes first. I personally think Muslim or terrorist looking people should be checked fully at an airport. I also believe everyone should be checked fully to make sure no one could cause harm to the passengers. So it may be rude but it could also savesomeone's life.

Racial profiling is judging people based on their race. Some people call this racism. This has been around for a long time. Thousands of years ago, the Jews didn’t like the Samaritans. This was a form of racial profiling in the way that they were judging a group of people based on their background. Anyone is capable of anything. By this I mean that no matter who you are, what you look like, where you are from, you are capable of accomplishing anything. Anyone can make a terrorist attack, white, black, or purple… it doesn’t matter. But recently in the news, a man named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, attempted a terrorist attack on a plane that was going to Detroit. Based on this, and the fact that people from the Middle East were the ones who attacked us on 9/11, you could say that we can’t trust anyone foreign. They do say keep your friends close and your enemies closer, so why not? Numbers 25:17 says, "Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them,” The Midianites had turned the Israelites to false gods. This may have been why God said this. Anyways, everyone at airports should be checked, and if someone does look sketchy, then pull a Santa Clause and check them twice.

  46. racial profiling is when people suspect other people just because of their race or ehnic groups. if a muslim walks into an airport, everyone may be suspicious about that peticular guy. people may think he is a terorist. i think that racial profiling is wrong. just like in world war 2, when the japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, the government thought it was the right thing to do to put them in prison camps because they are japanese. God says to love your neighbors and by doing racial profiling, you are not doing this.

  47. Racial profiling is a form of racism. i dont think it should all the time. if we are suppose to treat other the way we wanted to be treated then why do we constantly get afraid of middle eastern people walking aroundin airport. but, racial profiling should come into play. if the reason why you didnt search a muslim man because you were trying not to be racist then racial profiling should of been in play.

  48. my mom says it's looking at the behaviors of a person because of they're race and forming opinions. I would have to say that racial profiling. is looking at someone who has different ways to life and categorizing them. It mostly happens because someone might look different. We do it all the time. Even if we don't think it clearly, it's somewhere in our minds. When people sees, someone different, we immediately form an opinion.

Racial profiling is in the name, you profile the race. they say its not racist but why would they name it "racial" oh i dont know, BECAUSE IT IS RACIST. but security does need to improve in airports. just because one person from the middle east was a terrerist doesnt mean all of them are.

  50. Racial profiling is when someone of a higher position is judging by race on wether a person could be bad or not. I dont think it should be used in airport security, i think that yes mulims and others have done more attacks, but many will put the bomb on others, anyone could be planning an attack, even children could have a bomb straped to them, racial profiling is not honoring God. if you suspect a problem than do to everyone what you do to someone who is different.

  51. I think that racial profiling happens immediately after you see someone that is from a different ethnic group or race. You automatically assume something about them because of something that their group of people has been involved in. For example, if you were in a store and you saw a man that was from France, you may tent to think that he is a wimp and slightly feminine. Or, if you were shopping and a muslin came into the same store as you, you might be frightened and go to the other side of the store. Airports are interesting places because you do see so many people from so many different places. I do not think that airports should use racial profiling. However, I do think that they should profile people who look suspicious, no matter if they think it will be offensive or not. Airports and planes need to be secured. -Frances Hamilton : - )

Racial profiling is a way of winnowing down a large group of people into smaller groups by defining them by their race. As has been mentioned before, this has been happening since the beginning of time. I think with the many resources our intelligence agencies have at their fingertips, resorting to racial profiling is lazy. For example, certain characteristics and behaivors have been marked for suicide bombers - bombers have been both men and women, adolescent and adult, jew, arab and gentile. In studying behaivor, group association and travel patterns, potential suicide bombers have been identified. I think our intelligence agencies should use their vast amount of information to identify potential terrorists rather than racial profiling.

  52. Racial profiling is when you make assumptions about a person based on their race. For example, because of terrorist's threats to our country recently, people sometimes assume that every Arab person is against the United States. I think this is ignorant but a little understandable because of things that have happened. I agree with Frances, racial profiling is something that happens almost instantaneous to when you see someone. I remember one time my mom and I were at the grocery store, and we saw a man pulling his hoodie all the way on and stinking his hand in his pocket. He looked really suspicious and I didn't really want to be in the same store as him...So we waited until he left the store to go in. This was a silly thing because the store was fine, while he was there and after he left. But things like that happen everyday. I think that airport security is definitely nessacary and important, but I think it's wrong to think that every person from a single place is going to bomb us, because of something that happened before. But, I do believe that airports should take precautions.

  53. Racial profiling is when you see a a person and you judge them. I do not think this appropriate for normal people but i think if necessary it would be ok for airport security. If one is truly looking out for others and their safety then it might be a good idea. I feel that if you just look at someone and judge it is wrong but for safety it is ok

My father says it is wrong and racist but under certain circumstances it is necessary. Like when it comes to the president.

  55. I think that racial profiling is when people are grouped into ethnic groups by the way they look and how they act. It isn't just by the color of your skin, it could be by where you live and how you dress.
