U.S. History Question #8

Is voting a right or a privilege?

Should there be limits to who can vote in the United States of America?

Why or why not?

"Voting is a civic sacrament."

  1. I think that voting is a right if you are a citizen. But there should be a limit to who can vote. I think that you need to be a citizen for a certain number of years. Because if people came from all over the world and voted then left then it wold mess up who became president goveners or mayors. Also they should be over 18 and not be introuble with the law or had previously let out of jail. And you should be a tax payer.

Voting means many different things to different people. For instance maybe the people back then eg. white farmers and townspeople thought of it as a right. People like slaves probably thought of it as a privilege. Slaves thought of it as a privilege when actually it was a right. Voting to me is definitly a right. I think there should be a limit to vote. People have to wait they're turn to get citizenship and follow the laws. We wouldnt want people 6 or 7 voting would we? Or Someone who committed a crime. There should be a limit to voting, and it should be a right.

  3. Voting is a right because people deserve the freedom to choose political representatives for their government. The Lord gives everyone the choice to either accept Him as Savior or not, and voting is another God-given freedom. However, there should be limits to voting in the United States of America. Only adults should be allowed to vote so that they can make educated decisions on which representative to choose. Convicted felons should not be permitted vote because they obviously do not value the laws of America, as they have violated them through criminal activity. Finally, only citizens should be allowed to vote since foreigners could possibly change the outcome of the polls. Voting is a right that should be limited to adult citizens who have not committed a felony (or felonies).

  4. Voting is a big part of what sets the U.s apart from other countries. People who live in U.S. with these freedoms consider voting a God- Given right. People from other countries who do not have the right to vote would consider it a privilege. It depends on your perspective. I believe that people should have the right to vote, but we should not take it for granted because there are places where you cannot determine who has power in your country. Although, there should be limits to who can vote in the United States. They must be a citizen of the U.S. and lived in the U.S. for a considerable amount of time so immigrants come for a short time, vote and leave. There must also be age limit because young people tend to be bribed and persuaded more easily than adults. People with mental problems are to be considered as well. I am not exactly sure what degree of mental confusion would rule them unable to vote since I am not an expert in this subject. Criminals could also turn the tide if someone promised to get them out of if they gave their vote. Currently, most of these are in action in U.S. and that is key to the way our government works.

  5. In my opnion, voting is a right, not a privilage. Back then blacks did not have the right to vote and all women did not either. That is why everyone should take their right to vote seriously and not take it for granted. Their actually should be limits on who can vote but not by race or being a man or a woman, but by if you are an american citizen. Some countries would then try to send their people to vote for a bad candidate to make the country unbalanced. To sum it all up voting is a right and every single person has that right.

  6. The freedom to vote is a privilege for United States citizens. This privilege comes with responsibilities and should not be taken lightly. To maintain the purity of our system, people should be involved and educated on current world events and the politics of our country's government. Whether or not you are granted this privilege should have nothing to do with your race, gender or religion, but should be based on each individuals willingness to actively participate in the process.

  7. Voting in my opinion is a priviledge. It is taken for granted to much and is a very special priveledge. Not everyone deserves it. It's important and some citizens really shouldn't deserve but they still can if they want. Not to be offensive towards immagrants but I think that there should be a pretty solid number of years as a citizen untill an immigrant can vote. If people really want to vote for what they believe in then that is fine. Some just vote for random people. Voters need to be educated about the canidates before they vote.

In my opinion, voting is a privilege. There used to be so many rules and regulations for voting. Blacks couldn't vote until a certain time. Slaves were also counted as 3/5 of a vote until a certain time. Women couln't vote until a certain time. And now, you have to be 18 to vote. Now, if you are 18 and older and a legal American Citizen, you are allowed to vote. In 2012, if you vote, you have a great privilege.

  9. AS AN AMERICAN, WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE ( OVER 18) AND I THINK THAT'S A GOOD PRIVALAGE BUT, IT HASN'T ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY...USED TO BE THAT AFRICAN AMERICANS COULDN'T VOTE...NEITHER COULD WOMEN. PERSONALLY I THINK THAT EVERYONE SHOOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE IF THEY ARE EDUCATED ENOUGH...

  10. In my opinion, voting is a privilege, but sometimes people view it as a birth right. Back then African Americans and all women were not allowed to vote, but when African American men were given the privilege to vote. They took it very seriously. Most people today view voting as a right. In my opinion, some citizens should not be able to vote such as citizens who have committed a felony. I feel that if they can not abide by the basic rules of the United States then how can they respect the major responsibility of voting. Also I think that people who vote, because they can without even knowing about the candidates goals and backgrounds. It shows that you do not care if the U.S. changes or not. It's okay if you vote for what you believe in against the odds. Voting is a privilege and you should have the initiative to find out as much as you can about the candidate that you want to run our country.

  11. I think that voting is a right. Everyone should have a say in who they want to lead their city and country. I still think that there should be limitations for who can vote. In order to vote for our leaders, they need to be citizens of that country. Foreigners could change the outcome of a huge decision. Also, you need to be old enough to understand what is going on. We wouldn't want a five year old kid voting for someone because of the way talk. Finally, you shouldn't be able to vote if you are in jail. The country would be chaos if it was run by criminals.

  12. I think voting is a right. Although in some countries citizens can't vote but every person has a right to speak their mind and who they think is right to run our country. In my opinion if voting was a privilege i would feel as if i was looked down on, as if my opinion did not matter that much. Because, that privilege could easily taken away. Voting is a right, no one can take that away. Some people may say that others don't deserve to vote, but if you are apart of the U.S. you deserve to have your voice heard. Thats why voting is a right not privilege.

  13. i think voting is a right. God allows us to choose who leads us spiriualy so we should be able to choose who leads us physically. but we cannot have just anyone voting. Children should not be able to vote becuse we do not understand about politics as much as adults do and adults could be easily manipulate, bribe, or even threaten for usto vote for someone. Also criminals should not vote because they clearly do not care about the law.

  14. I bbelieve that voting is a right if you are a citizen of your country. When deciding how to run a government, people should be able to make their voice heard. The government shouldn't be able to choose who gets to vote, because I believe that people should be free to say what they believe. On the other hand I do not think that everyone shoulde be allowed to vote. Only adults should be allowed, because if children could vote I don't think that they would understand everything that they are voting on, because I sure know I wouldn't. Then, on the other hand, someone shouldn't be stopped from voting if the are a citizen, because of race or skin color. So, right now I believe that the US is doing a good job on who should vote and I hope that other countries around the world will follow the example that the US sets four voting.

  15. Voting is a right, we as citizens have the right to vote. I also think it is a privilege. Some people in other countries don’t have the privilege to vote, but we do. I think most people should be able to vote, except those insane or imprisoned. Illegal aliens should not be allowed to vote; first you have to get your citizenship

  16. I think voting is defiantly a privaledge. Although I do think there should be restrictions on who is allowed to vote, for example the only people who should be allowed to vote are adults. Most of them make educated decisions on who to vote for. Then again there should be restrictions on adults to. For instance adults who have commited felonys. If they do not make educated decisions then they will not make educated votes.

  18. I think voting is a right, if you abide by the laws, but if you are arrested, and convicted of a felony, you lose the right to vote.
No, there should no be limits to who can vote in the United States, if you are citizen. If you are not a citizen of the United States you should not have the right to vote because the United States is not your country until you are sworn in by the Constitution, and you agree to live by it.

  19. I believe voting is a privilege. Many people in this country should not be able to vote for various reasons. If I could I would make a law were people with a low IQ or didn't finish high school should not be able to vote. They would vote for foolish people for dumb reasons. They would only think of themselves and not for the whole country. America would be poisoned by these fools and treated terribly by other countries if we all did that. I know for a fact that many people voted for Obama just because he is African-American. Yes, I understand he is the first Black president ,but that is a terrible reason to vote for someone. We all should vote for what we think is best for the country. I apologize if this is late.

    Sincerely,

  20. I think voting is a right but there are certain boundries that determine if you can vote or not. If i chose how the voting process was i would have certain limits that a person could have to vote, some of those limits are:
    1.Must be a U.S citizen
    2.18 or older
3.Must have a high school education
4.Convited Felons can't vote unless they been out of jail for ten years
5.Must not have a mental disorder
I believe these limitations are uselful because so that there are some standards that apply to exercising the right to vote.

I think that voting is a right for all Americans. It does not matter what race you are. If God made people with different races, then why would we not let them vote? I do not think voting is a privilege because that is like saying that some people are better than others and that they have the right to vote. So I think that everybody has the right to vote no matter what race or color they are!

  22. I think voting is a right for all Americans to be able to have. They should be able to express their feelings about who they want to lead the country. It wont be fare to say that certain groups of people wouldn't be able to vote and everyone else can. Even if they are a different race or gender. Every American citizen should be able to vote because we live in a free country. I do think that it is a good thing for us to have an age limit because if we didn't little kids would be able to vote. If that happened their parents could just make them vote for who they want.

  23. Voting is a right. We deserve to have a say in who is in charge of us. Thats the whole reason why we wanted independence in the first place! As a country, I think it is our rights to be able to vote.
Yes, I do think there should be some limits as to who votes. There should be some kind of simple test to prove that your not just some idiot voting just for kicks. You haft to know at least a little about our country and about the way the government works to vote. Also, No kids. No one young and inexperienced. That would be bad, because who knows what a two-year-old would say about politics.
Limits are vital for a fair vote.

  24. I think that all U.S citizens should have the right to vote. Because we are voting on for who possibly runs country, state or even city. People who aren't criminals and are of a certain have the right. Unless you have a mental illness or such. Those are the limits on who should and shouldn't be able to vote but other why's unless you exceed on of the limits the right to vote should be yours.

  25. I think as an American citizen it is our right and privilege to vote. Some countries aren’t privileged enough to vote like we can. With the system of government we have in America it is a right to vote. I think all countries should have a right to vote on big decisions. In America I think there should be only 2 requirements to vote. Someone should be overt 18, and be an American citizen. I think the reason you need to be over 18 is so you have some common sense, and if someone is not in our country they shouldn’t have a say in the way it should be run

  26. Voting is a right and a privilege. It is right because in America we are all allowed to vote and it is a right for all american citizens. It is a privilege because most other countries don't allow their citizens to vote. There shouldn't be a limit on who could vote because we are all created equal. However, people who are not American citizens shouldn't be able to vote.
