U.S. History Question #7

"Bleeding Kansas"

Was John Brown a hero or a villain? Pick a side of the argument and make a case.

Why?

  1. I think John Brown was a man with good intentions, but his chosen methods for achieving his goal were ill conceived. Trying to abolish slavery was a noble cause, but John Brown thought that murder and bloodshed were the only ways to fulfill his ideas. Murdering slave owners in Kansas had little effect on stopping slavery, instead it only angered southern sympathizers. His raid on the Harper's Ferry arsenal was his last stand in his attempts to free slaves. This action did have some effect because southerners became worried that their way of life might end soon. John Brown's thoughts were heroic ones, but his actions made people see him as a villain.

  2. John brown was a hero. He stood up for what was right. I have respect for that. He did the right thing no-matter what the consequences. He Died doing what’s right. To me he is a hero. Even though he did not have success he would be a hero still.

  3. Whether he was a hero or a villain, John Brown made a big impact on the start of the Civil War. He was willing to fight and die for his conviction which is understandable. Although, his solutions for the problem of slavery was violence and fighting. His raid on the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal was of a righteous cause but not very tactical. When he was soon caught after his attempted raid and taken to trial. He was sentenced to hang but faced his death with courage. A famous African American Frederick Douglas said” I was willing to live for slavery; he was willing to die for it”. This is very true; John Brown believed in a just cause, he just used the wrong strategy. Some would say he was a radical abolitionist or a criminal, but I believe he was a good man with the wrong tactics.

  4. I think that John Brown was a villian. I do think that he had good intentions when he was trying to free the slaves, but I don't think that violence was the answer to that problem. Because he killed people, not many people were going to help him in his attempt to stop slavery. Most people would see him as a murderer and a criminal instead of a hero. In Kansas he wasn't doing the right thing and even if he belived he was, slave owners in the South weren't going to side with him. He was correct in that slavery should be done away with, but he tried to end it in the wrong ways. Because he used violence to try to solve the slavery problem, I think he was a villian.

  5. I believe John Brown had thought what he was doing was right, but it was quite the opposite. He was doing well by trying to free slave, but he used his Abolitionist ideals the wrong way. If I could ask him a question it would be, why would you sacrifice people to try and save people? I think using violence was wrong and that’s what made him a villain. John Brown was definitely good for trying to fix the unholy injustice known as slavery. Although after what he had done, he became the villain in the end.

  6. John brown meant well. He really did. He was a hero for standing up for what was right. He was a hero for seeing how the bible said that every man was equal and to not be slaves. He was not a hero with his actions though. He didn't go about getting rid of slavery correctly in my opinion. He went to far with all the fighting and blood shed. Violence was not the answer to all of that. He was a hero for all of his convictions and standing up for what was right but not for his actions.

  7. I think John Brown was a hero. He stood up for what was right (abolishing the evil known as slavery). John Brown was willing to die for his beliefs. His raid at Harper's Ferry was a courageous act with good intentions. Even though some say the raid was unsuccessful, I think it was successful. It helped trigger the Civil War; during the war, President Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in states rebelling against the United States; eventually, an amendment would be passed that would free all slaves. In the long run, Brown's goal of abolition was accomplished. Because John Brown was a courageous abolitionist who was willing to die for his beliefs, I think he was a hero.

  8. I think that he had a good idea but he used vilance to inforce it. I think he was a hero though. He was trying to stop slavery. Even though that wasn't the main cause of the civil war. It scared the south and made them think what the slaves could do if they choose to rise up.

  9. To me, John Brown was a hero to all. He knew that slavery was wrong and he faught aganist it to help preserve the rights of the Constitution. He also knew that in God's eyes slavery was a horrible and cruel thing. While John Brown was young, he became an abolishanist. Even though John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry was not succesful, he scared the South to think slaves might rise up and in some opnions became known as the "Meteor" of the war.

I think John brown was a man who thought he was doing a good thing for the union, but he was really doing horrible things to innocent people. Therefore I think he was a villain because of his horrible ways to do what he thought was right. That is kind of like John Wilse Booth because he thought he was doing a right cause too. Except John Brown wasnt that bad. Overall I think John Brown was a vallain.

  11. John Brown was a good spirited man, with some peeks here and there he still made a big impact on the Civil War. One of his problems was that he was overly confident. Many considered him a hero, including me. Sometimes when others think highly of you it can raise you're spirit to a point of ignorance. All and all, even though he used violence instead of compromising, he still was a hero...at least to me.:)

  12. John Brown was a hero for many slaves. He showed that there are people that still haven't given up on the slaves and he gave some slaves hope. SO he was a huge hero for a bunch of people. It shows that there are people that belive that they can finally put a end to slavery all over the world. There are even some white people who think that John Brown was a hero.

  13. In my opinion, I think John Brown was a hero in someways, but he chose a bad method of abolishing slavery. He was a hero for trying to get rid of the evil which was slavery. Besides him being a hero or a villain, he was really the beginning of the Civil War. He was the icon that said, that it was told to him by God that he should abolish this evil. His raid on Harper's Ferry was done with good intentions. I think this was very heroic deed, but the lost of human life cast a dark shadow over the good motives he intended.

John Brown definitely had good intentions, after all he wanted to free the slaves. He may have good intentions just chose the wrong decision. I personally think that he was a bit of both, but think to others like slaves that he was a hero, but to slave owners a villain. He killed innocent people like slave owners wives and children. That to me is extremely upsetting. John Brown should not have used violence against innocent people. He made a huge impact though on the civil war and changed peoples lives. He was willing to die for what he believed in. To me he sounds more like a villain because slavery would have ended eventually and he killed many innocent people. If i had to chose he'd be a villain but i really think he had goo intentions and was a kind hearted man.

  15. John Brown wasn't a hero to all. To the south he was a villain because he wanted to abolish slavery. To the North her was a hero and the start of the civil war. He was a hero to me because he was willing to be humiliated and killed for his strong conviction. John Brown was a great man to most but not to all.

  16. when people first here about John Brown and how he wanted to stop slavery most would think that he was a hero, but then people would here that he used violence to stop slavery. Now most people would think of him more as a villain. For me I don't think of him as a hero or a villain. He is not a hero because he was violent and as we have all heard violence is never the answere, and he is not a villain because he had good intentions.Of course bad guys don't have good intentions, and thats what makes them villains. Heros don't use violence and do the right thing and thats what makes them hero's.

  17. I think that John Brown had good intentions, but acted poorly upon them. If he had been more peaceful, he would have been an American hero. Since he acted with violence, most people from the south viewed John Brown as a villain. In the long run, he helped free the slaves by scaring the south. He caused the Civil War to come sooner, and caused many people to die. John Brown was a hero in his intentions, and a villain in his actions. He was called the meteor of the war because he pushed the south over the line, and caused the Civil War to come sooner.

  18. I think of John Brown as a hero. He wanted to abolish slavery. He was also viewed as a hero in the North because he was the start of the Civil War. Southerners believed he was a villain because they knew no other way of living; without slaves.

  19. I think that Brown was a hero. He never set out to do bad deeds. He was trying to do a good deed of stopping slavery. He didn't want to kill those people he just thought that was what God wanted him to do. He didn't do this to cause trouble, but to erase slavery. He had the chance to be a famous hero, but acted out of violence and now many people see him as a villain.

  20. I think John Brown was a hero because he was one of the people who wanted to stop slavery. John Brown thought that it was the right thing to do (trying to end slavery) even though people died along the way. It was hard to change people's minds and some people would rather die than to see the end of slavery.

  21. If i was from the south I would probably think John Brown was a villian because he killed people brutally. J.B. believed in no slavery and he would do anything to abolish it, and that scared the south. If i was from the north I would probably think he was a hero because he died for an important cause and was one of the only people who actually stood up for the slaves. My opion though, as a seventh grader, is that J.B. was a brutal hero.

  22. John Brown wasa hero is some minds and a villian in others.Personally i tinhk he was a hero. he was fighting for the right cause and he had to take extreme measures to stand up for it. Some people thought it was to much but i think he took the right action to fight it. In his time he stood out because he was one of the lone abolionists. He was ahead of his time because he was thinking about the future of the counrty instead of the present moment. thats why i believe John Brown was a hero.

  23. Villan. He killed many people's lives-which was unnessary. he could have tryed to nogotiate instead of fight. He needed to come to people in power instead of scivilions. Death is not always to awncer to stoping something. harlan kyle
